In response to the Federal Trade Commission’s decision today to block the proposed Kroger-Albertsons merger, UFCW Local 135 reaffirms our opposition. We stand in solidarity with the FTC’s concerns regarding the anticompetitive nature of the merger and its potential adverse effects on union workers and consumers.
The FTC’s ruling validates our concerns that the merger could result in reduced wages, benefits, and job security for union grocery workers. The newly combined company would wield increased leverage, jeopardizing our ability to negotiate fair employment terms.
The ruling also underscores the critical importance of maintaining competition in the grocery industry to protect consumers from higher prices and diminished product quality.
While the FTC’s decision is a significant step in the right direction, we remain vigilant as Kroger may pursue legal avenues to challenge the ruling and the specter of a corporate hedge fund running the board of Albertsons continues to loom large, casting doubts on the future of the company.
UFCW Local 135 will continue to closely monitor developments and advocate for the best interests of our members and the community at large. Together, we will ensure that the voices of workers and consumers are heard and respected in the face of corporate consolidation.
