UFCW Local 135 Purchases New Building

UFCW Local 135 is excited to announce the purchase of a new building, marking a significant milestone in the history of the union. Located at 10075 Carroll Canyon Road in the Scripps Ranch area of San Diego, this property will serve as the union’s new headquarters.

Previously owned by the Cabrillo Federal Credit Union, the new building offers a welcome change from the challenges faced at the Mission Valley location. Issues such as a leaky roof, outdated plumbing, limited parking, insufficient space, poor air conditioning, and more have plagued the Mission Valley office for far too long. The decision to seek new office space was further enforced by the city’s unfathomable approval that is allowing The Home Depot to construct a massive store next door on the property formerly occupied by the Scottish Rite Center.

While the Mission Valley office holds a significant historical legacy dating back to the Meat Cutters and Retail Clerks unions, the challenges posed by the proximity to The Home Depot will be insufferable and insurmountable. The anticipated increase in traffic on narrow two-lane Camino Del Rio South during construction and upon the store’s opening would have disrupted operations and posed significant safety risks for members, retirees, and staff. The recent death of a cyclist by an inattentive motorist in front of our building is but one example of the current dangerous conditions.

The newly purchased building, acquired for $4,500,000, is a two-story office structure built in 1983. Spanning 17,000 square feet on a 1.11-acre parcel, it is conveniently located off the I-15 freeway. The property features a small courtyard and offers 65 parking spaces on-site.

An initial investment in construction will be required for a customized buildout to meet the union’s specific needs. Once completed, the new headquarters is expected to provide a more suitable and functional office and union hall for the membership and staff of UFCW Local 135.

As the union transitions to the new space, plans for the Mission Valley building will be considered in due course. Options may include selling or leasing the property, with decisions guided by the best financial interests of the membership.

While the move into the new building may take nine months to a year, the union remains committed to servicing members and negotiating the best contracts possible. UFCW Local 135 is dedicated to ensuring a smooth transition and appreciates the continued support of its membership as we embark on this exciting new chapter.

Stay tuned for updates and information on a future open house as UFCW Local 135 progresses towards our new home.
