Help end blood cancer!
Judy Harless has been a member of UFCW Local 135 for 45 years. She’s an essential worker at Albertsons 711 in San Marcos. Her nephew Kevin Tenney, a former member of Local 135 himself, was diagnosed in 2020 with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).
AML is a type of cancer that begins in the bone marrow. It results from acquired changes in the DNA of a developing marrow cell. Once the marrow cell becomes a leukemic cell, it multiplies uncontrollably into billions of cells.
Only 1 in 4 AML patients survive five years beyond diagnosis.
Judy reached out to her union to see if we would be willing to help raise funds for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society’s San Diego Man and Woman of the Year campaign. Judy’s sister, Char Ewell, is a nominee for Woman of the Year. She is fundraising for Team Kevin, named after her son.
UFCW Local 135 has had a relationship with LLS for decades, dating back to the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America Local 229 when Secretary and Business Manager Max Osslo served on the national board of the Leukemia Society. We also host an annual Charity Golf Classic whose proceeds go to LLS.
Our commitment to ending blood cancers runs through our veins at UFCW Local 135. With that in mind, we have committed $10,000 to the Team Kevin campaign. And we are hoping that we can match that amount through donations from our members, our union siblings in labor, our friends and families, and the greater San Diego community.
