In a major victory for working people in San Diego, REI workers at the company’s Kearny Mesa store have voted to join UFCW Local 135.
After months of organizing, more than 100 REI Green Vests voted in favor of union representation through a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election, becoming the newest members of UFCW Local 135.
The victory makes the San Diego location the third unionized REI store in California, the 12th unionized REI store in the nation, and the largest unionized REI location in the country.
Workers organized around issues including fair pay, sustainable scheduling, stronger workplace protections, and a meaningful voice on the job. Their successful campaign also marks an important milestone in the growing labor movement in San Diego and the nationwide organizing effort taking place at REI stores across the country.
Since 2022, workers at REI locations nationwide have been organizing to improve workplace conditions and strengthen worker voice. With San Diego’s victory, the growing national movement continues to expand.
UFCW Local 135 President Todd Walters praised the workers for their determination and solidarity:
“This victory belongs to the Green Vests who stood together and believed in the power of collective action. We are honored that these workers chose to place their trust in UFCW Local 135 and excited to welcome them into our union family. Their courage and determination helped make history here in San Diego, and we look forward to standing beside them as we fight for a strong first contract.”
The successful campaign reflects growing momentum among workers seeking a greater voice in the workplace and stronger protections on the job.
For the workers at REI in Kearny Mesa, the work now turns toward bargaining a national contract and building a stronger future together.
Congratulations to the newest members of UFCW Local 135!
