History of UFCW Local 135

1903

Butchers Unions Affiliates with San Diego Federated Trades and Labor Council.

1917

Retail Clerks Affiliates with San Diego Federated Trades and Labor Council.

1936

Meat Cutters Local 229 becomes one of the strongest unions in the nation under the leadership of Max Osslo.

1944

Local 1222 is granted a charter from the Retail Clerks International Association.

1979

The Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workmen of North America merged with the Retail Clerks to form the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. The Barbers and Beauticians Union joined UFCW Later that year.

1986

The memberships of the Retail Clerks Local 1222 and the Meat Cutters Local 229 merged into UFCW Local 135.

2003

The historic Southern California grocery strike involved 70,000 UFCW members from October 2003 to March 2004 and was one of the most significant actions the U.S. labor movement took in the last twenty years.
